An Analysis of Bassai Sho

by Marcello Galli

UK flag Kata movements are sometimes very difficult to apply to a real bout, most kata had a complex and confused history, sometimes becoming exercises for body training, ineffective for real sparring.
Some techniques are really impossible to understand and apply.
I wonder if some technique can be better understood if performed with weapons instead of being "empty-hands". Weapons are used in Chinese martial arts, and went to Okinawa together with Chinese self-defense techniques. In modern karate there are no weapons, this may have a deep philosophical meaning, but I believe that their knowledge where simply lost.
Weapons remain hidden in kata movements, together with a lot of grip and throw techniques.

Bassai Sho has been introduced by Itosu, it has been reported as containing techniques for defense against a long stick. But I believe that it contains part of a bo kata. In the following I try to explain this idea with some photos, although I don't know very well the bo techniques and my "bo" positions can be rough or ineffective.

UK flag The start position is unusual and unique among Shotokan Kata, but if we where simply holding a staff ?
UK flag This is usually intended as a low block, but with a staff we find exactly the same movement of the hands we have in the kata, while we perform a clockwise rotation, lowering the upper side of the staff.
UK flag To use this as an upper block I have to change some detail in the movement, but with the staff I have the same position of the the kata, with the hands rotated in the same way.
UK flag The technique below is explained as a bare-hands block of a staff, but can be also a block and attack with the staff.
UK flag This low block, wide rotation of the hand, low block again, is difficult to use without changing details in the movements. Sometimes it is explained as a throwing technique, but the details have to be changed. With the staff this is a low block and a circular attack, similar to a nagi-nata blow ( a spear blow rotating counter-clockwise). The movement is very similar to the kata, almost nothing to change. In the last photo I use a high staff attack, but it can be lowered, as in the kata low block.
Once Master Shirai showed us this same movement, but used to disarm an opponent holding a staff. It seems to me a real staff attack.
UK flag We have seen this movement above. IT flag Questo movimento l'abbiamo gia' visto sopra.
UK flag In the kata we have a change of direction and an unusual guard. But this seems be the continuation of the above staff technique, with a blow, followed by a counterclockwise rotation, in a naginata-type attack, as we have seen above.
UK flag Also the remaining part of Bassai Sho can be done with a staff, but I can't go on without changing the details of the positions. It is only in the first part of the kata than the use of the staff is so close to the exact movements that have been transmitted to us by Bassai Sho.
